Help identify the hum in Alberta; unanswered questions need to be answered

There continue to be unanswered questions about the hum, or hums, that are disturbing people throughout Alberta.

The hum recorded and analyzed in Ranchlands, Calgary was in the 40 Hz range.  Similarly, the hum in Edmonton seems to vary between 37 - 40 Hz.  For those familiar with a piano, the hum is similar in pitch to D1 - D#1 on the instrument.

What does this mean?  We don't know.  Usually, a hum at that frequency is caused by something man-made.  Likely, we are looking for a mechanical cause, or one that is similar.  But, with our limited resources it's a difficult task to try to track down the cause, or causes, of the hum.

It is interesting to note that many of the people who have spoken with our team noticed the hum starting in mid-2008.  What is it that began, in Alberta, around that time, that could cause a hum of this nature to be heard in numerous locations in the province?

We would like to ask those of you following this blog to please pass along the link to our site to as many people as you can, including your city counsel, MLAs and MPs.  Despite six years of sharing information, recordings and data, government bodies have been unwilling to engage in locating the source(s) of the hum.  Perhaps a grassroots movement could help garner the active support needed?

Until we know what is causing a hum to be heard in Alberta, there continues to be unanswered questions about the risks to peoples' health.  Those who are bothered by the hum have a greatly reduced quality of life due to sleep disruptions and the inability to relax.  Yet, how do we know that the hum isn't affecting those who do not hear it?  Identifying the source of the hum(s) is essential to answering that question.

This team has proven that a hum exists in Alberta.  It's been recorded and analyzed by sound professionals with stellar reputations.  People need to know what it is, where it's coming from, and how it's affecting Albertans.  Please help make this request for assistance to answer these questions too big  for our politicians and citizens to ignore.

We appreciate the continued support of our readers and followers.  Thank you.

Thanks for the blog as a central information source on this phenomenon. I have a hum in Aspen Woods, Calgary, but am hoping it's related to ongoing residential construction in this developing neighbourhood and will go away at some point.

Hi Nigel. Thanks for being in touch. When you were in Kananaskis Country, whereabouts were you? Do you recall if you were close to any power lines, or towers of any kind, close to waterfalls, anything that might account for the sound?

Only thing anywhere, and certainly not close,is the millarville gas plant.I hear the sound even with a se wind, which I'm sire would block any sound reaching the sheep river valleyIt is exactly the se sound that I hear in okotoks

I've been hearing the hum in the Ranchridge Court area for a couple of months now, but only when I am in my room (which is - I'm not sure how to describe it - kind of a half-basement in between the main floor and the actual basement). It sounds exactly like how other people have described it, like a truck idling far away of a far-off jet engine. It's starting to drive me a little crazy.

At first I thought it was the airport. Maybe the digging of the tunnel or planes engines being tested. This hum goes on for hours! I am hearing it now at 6am on Sunday morning. The intensity changes but the frequency remains the same. It has kept me awake many a night.

A weird hum woke me up last night and even my bookcase was vibrating so much that the crystal glasses on one if the shelves we're ringing. Very disturbing sound. We are in Aspen Woods.

Regarding the glasses moving on your shelf, have you ruled out any construction work going on in your neighbourhood?

Eva, we had reports of a hum throughout Ranchlands. You're not alone. Unfortunately, we do not know what is causing it.

Anon, are you still hearing the hum out by the airport?

I was trying to search what animals were howling in the field behind my house and found this site.I had no idea that this was a problem! In my queensland SE home every night I heard this hum that was like a vibration that went right throigh my head making me out a pillow over my head trying to Block it out. Some nights stronger then others. But I thought it was just me and didn't pay much attention to it. Wow.

Hum can also be heard in airdrie. Heard it at night from 2:30-5:30am. Sounds like a generator or something. Also heard it back in 2008 in bearspaw area.
